Mr. Clean Magic Erasers: Creative Uses For These Household Cleaning Blocks That Truly Work Magic!
Who knew, that I'd first hear about Mr. Clean Magic Erasers at a conference about blogging?
It's true. When Glenn Reynolds (a.k.a. "The Instapundit" and godfather of the blogging world) mentioned in passing how much he liked this handy household gadget, I knew they must be great. And when he commented on their ability to work on a wide variety of surfaces, rather than just those stated on the box, I knew this product would be right up my alley.
I'm not kidding when I say these Magic Erasers truly work miracles... and they're only about a buck apiece!
-
These foam-like pads are extremely lightweight and resemble pieces of styrofoam. - They are made of a porous melamine material that gets into hard-to-clean surfaces and tiny grooves... like magic!
- All it takes is a dab of water to moisten the eraser. No other cleaning chemicals needed (...and no elbow grease).
My Favorite Uses For Mr. Clean Magic Erasers
The very first time I tried a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, I was SHOCKED. It worked so well... but what really sold me was its ability to clean that slightly rough, textured surface that the handles of our appliances are made of.After a few minutes of wiping down appliances, light switches, and cupboards (also lightly textured), I was compelled to go all around the house LOOKING for stuff to clean... These things are great at getting into the tiny cracks & crevices of virtually any surface!
My other faves:
Removing scuff marks from floors, doors, and baseboards (...not only scuff marks, but also years of black grime & built-up hairspray on white baseboards in the bathrooms & door panels of cabinets/doors)
Making tennis shoes look like new again
Cleaning white grout effortlessly

Cleaning the textured plastic parts of the computer monitor, keyboard & mouse
Removing set-in stains from drink coasters (...even those ceramic ones)
Cleaning in the tiny nooks & crannies of the electric can opener
...but wait, there's more!
Following are dozens of creative uses for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers -- from others who've used the product.
In general, these magic erasers can "remove" or "clean" virtually anything (...but do check the warning on the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser site first).
Check out this video showing the product in use, and addressing what it's made of.

But wait, there's more! Here are even more great uses for Magic Erasers that I've recently come up with!
How To Get The Most Out Of Magic Erasers
The only downside to these eraser blocks is that they don't last long. But that's a testament to their cleaning power -- their tiny pores get filled with all the gunk that's hiding in small spaces.
To get more life out of your Magic Erasers, try this:
1. Cut each Magic Eraser into 4 equal-sized pieces (across the shortest width of the eraser, rather than lengthwise). This way, you get 4 times the amount of cleaning out of one Eraser!
2. Lightly mist it with water (by misting or using the kitchen sink sprayer), rather than saturating it with water -- which causes it to shrivel up more.
3. Scrub lightly with the Magic Eraser, then wipe the area with a wet towel to prevent smearing the dirt/grime and remove any residue.
4. When it starts to get yucky (after cleaning a few different items), simply spray rinse it again to revive it a bit. Then squeeze the excess water out, and continue using it until it starts to shred.

Paul, I love TSP too. But, I have to commend the Magic Eraser for the tremendous job it did on my painted fireplace. We'd had smoke damage on the outside of the fireplace since January. I'd tried everything, including TSP (on recommendation of the fireman who helped put the flames out). None of the other solutions did a very good job, but the Magic Eraser just knocked out the messy soot and left the fireplace facade looking so much better.
It's not perfect, but it looks the best it has since the fire.
do they remove hair spray spots on the dash of a car?
Anne, that dark mark might not be a stain at all. The rest of your floor may have faded around where the tape was. You might need to have the floor refinished.
Does anyone know what will remove the discoloration on a hardwood floor that remains after I have taken up the old carpet tape? Where the tape used to be is an outline of the removed carpet tape, and that area is darker than the rest of the floor. The actual adhesive is no longer there, but the darkened imprint of the old tape remains. Please suggest a cure for this!
A girlfriend of mine swears by them, I was only slightly impressed. My favorite cleaner is TSP, Tri Sodium Phosphate. It is cheap, available at hardware stores, and is strong. If you have dainty skin, wear gloves!

THIS product is amazing!!! My son threw up all over the wall and when i came home it was all dry, so i got my mr.cleans magic eraser and got it damp, and tried it on the throw up.. IT WORKED COMPLETELY! other products wont do that. it also removed herpes from my wife!!
The Mr. Clean Eraser removed Sharpie marker off of my solid wood dresser that my 20 month old son decided to decorate. This product is the best!!
How safe would it be to use on cooking stones?
Magic Erasers are a great tool for watercolorists for lifting pigment off the paper without damaging it. Just tear off small pieces for dabbing small areas of a painting.
Thankyou for info. I am going to K-mart and buy a magic eraser tomorrow and try it, I will let you the result. I did not want to ruin my dress, I accidently make my blouse with a permement
Thankyou again for your help
Sue
I just used it clean my cream colored leather chair and it came out beautifully. You mentioned conditioning it--How is that done?
A friend gave me one to try when they first came out. I was sold!!! I love the product...and keep extra boxes around the kitchen, bathrooms, basement etc. Now I am giving them to my friends... who in turn are hooked. Great product... worth every cent.
I MAKE THINGS ON WOOD AS A HOBBY AND I RECENTLY USED CARBON PAPER. I TRIED EVERTHING TO REVOVE WHAT I DREW, SAND PAPER,INK ERASER BUT NOTHING WOULD TAKE THE CARBON DRAWING OFF. THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT THE MAGIC ERASER IN MY CUPBOARD. TO MY SUPRIZE IT TOOK IT OFF WITH NO PROBLEM. I USE THESE AT MY WORK AND IT IS THE BEST PRODUCT I EVER USED. NEXT TOO DOW BATHROOM CLEANER. THANK YOU YOUR PRODUCT KEEP ME FROM HAVING TO BUY MORE WOOD FOR MY PROJECT.
I fail to see how Proctor and Gamble can endorse such garbage it is useless I tried cleaning my patio chairs to-day and started erasing the chairs and the so called magic sponge fell apart after a minute or so I am returning this product for a refund!
I've had a cream-colored leather recliner for 15 years that just didn't come clean no matter what leather cleaners I used. Years and years of sitting on this thing and it was just turning grey. On a whim I purchased the Magic Eraser and prayed that it wouldn't ruin the leather. Oh my gosh...it almost looks brand new! Now I just wish there were an easier way to condition the leather!!!
I use the Magic Erase sponge often but the one thing I did not see on this website is I found it to be a lifesaver when you are eating and something gets on the blouse, tie or slacks you are wearing and do not have a change of clothes. Place a cloth underneath the article to absorb any water, dampen the sponge and blot the stain. It comes out w/o leaving any water mark.
Thank you for the website. As I was coming in from the grocery today, I accidently bumped the side of the garage leaving a paint scuff on my brand new car. I used the magic eraser on it and it came right off! I had about 6 under the sink and would have never thought to use a magic eraser on a paint scuff. I did and it worked!! :)
The magic eraser is fantastic! The front of our fibreglass 5th wheel was badly marked with black from poplar trees. We tried everything advertised to take off black streaks, even WD40 and had no luck. As a last resort tried the eraser and couldn't believe how easily the black came off with no scratches.
The Universal Eraser Sponge, which is identical to the Magic Eraser can be purchased for a fraction of the cost at www.spongeoutlet.com
LAST SAT. NIGHT SOMEONE SPRAYED PAINTED MY TRUCK ON TNE DOORS AND WINDOWS AND I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO PAY ALMOST $200. THEN MY FRIEND TOLD ME TO USE THE MAGIC ERASER AND IT ALL CAME OFF AND YOU CANT EVEN TELL THAT ANYTHING HAPPENED.SO THANKS FOR THE GREAT PRODUCT .I TOLD EVERYBODY ABOUT THE ERASER AND TOLD THEM TO BUY IT. THANKS

Gosh, I never thought of cutting SOS pads in half. But what a WONDERFUL idea!
Thanks.
And what a great story about Magic Erasers saving the day... and your cherished pictures! Cheers.
I had a Magic Eraser at my house after my dad's wife introduced it to me and told me to try it on the magnetic strip around the refrigerator door. I was very pleased with it and I kept Magic Erasers around since I had a toddler who loved to get creative around the house with pens and crayons. After the birth of my second son we didn't have the money to afford the huge portrait package from the hospital like we did with my older son. One day my then 2 year old son got ahold of a Sharpie permanent marker and marked all over the wooden trim on my couch, the endtables, the kitchen table, the baseboards, and (gasp!!!) my 6 month old's ONLY hospital portraits!! I was devastated because I had no way of ordering replacements. I chalked it up to a loss with the picture, but I didn't throw it away. I got the Magic Eraser and with almost no effort at all I got the marker off the other things and I though well, this will work or not, either way the picture is already ruined. So I tried a little spot on my son's picture. To my total shock the marker came right off and the picture was unharmed! The colors are just slightly altered where the marker was, but you can only spot the differences if you look really close. Well, I very gently wiped the rest of the marker away and then I called every person I knew and told them about what had happened. What started out as a terribly heart-breaking experience ended up being a joyous discovery!!
I, like many others, wish the Magic Eraser lasted longer. I never thought to cut it, I cut my SOS pads in half also to make them last longer, so why not the Magic Eraser!! Thanks for all the great tips!!
Can you please help me with finding a supplier in australia QLD to get magic blocks from. i use them everyday and have run out and would appreciate any information on getting some more please. Thank you
In an email exchange of gross blog posts between my blogging buddies, the topic changed to the "You should know this" category. I was directed to one of my favourite bloggers, Ms. Kerflop, or the blogger formerly known as Very Mom.
I don't want anyone making Ms. Kerflop feel bad. Please put yourself in her shoes and acknowledge that something similar has probably happened on your watch. Glass houses, stones and all that. I'm merely sharing this because it's a public safety issue. So behave.
Her adorable five-year-old son likes to help clean up. My Nate, at 22 months, has the same tendency. He will grab a wet cloth and try to wipe off marker stains from his mini Ikea desk and chairs. Ms. Kerflop's son, like many of us who like to get things really clean, has a penchant for Scotchbrite Easy Eraser or Mr. Clean Magic Erase cleaning pads. His mum was probably overjoyed that her son had fun cleaning. Who wouldn't be?
He knew not to eat them. He knew to keep them away from his younger siblings. What Ms. Kerflop, and I suspect most of the general population, did not know was how severe the chemicals in the sponge-type erasers were. There were no warnings of skin irritations on the packaging.
What followed after her son rubbed the pad on his face and chin sounds traumatic enough to turn any kid off cleaning ever again. Read her full account of the mishap here.
http://www.parentdish.com/2006/11/12/update-on-abrasive-household-cleaning-erasers/
Mr. Clean is now putting an advisory on their product, and 3M should be looking into it since Ms. Kerflop contacted them about her case.
I have used Magic Eraser on just about everything over the last couple of years. But you won't believe this! A couple of months ago, I was side-swiped by a car that left the scene. My beautiful white VW bug had three 1-2" deep black marks running along the length of the driver's side - from left-rear quarter panel to the front. I was heartbroken and angry. Insurance told me that I would have to take the car to get buffed out in order to remove the deep black rubber bumper scrapes. I couldn't afford the $500 deductible, so I did nothing. I just drove around in an unsightly car. Yesterday, I was cleaning my shower doors with the Magic Eraser when an idea popped into my head. Why not try it on my damaged car? I had nothing to lose, since I would probably have to have the car buffed out anyway. Well, you won't believe it!! The Magic Eraser took every last bit of the black stripes off of the car and did not damage the surface. I was shocked. I thought that the marks were embedded into the paint. The only "scars" I am left with are fine faint blue paint streaks that are indecipherable unless one looks very closely. Thank you Magic Eraser. You saved me $500.
I love the Mr. Clean erasers I work at a school and they work wonders on getting all the dirt off the desk. I just wish we could get them at a cheaper price or more for the money.
Found another great use for Mr. Clean Magic Erasers!...
They will remove 100% of the soot from the inside (or outside) of a candle jar/glass/container -- with no scrubbing! I used one this weekend to make a large Yankee Candle jar look brand new.
They work great. However, I wiped down a coffee table and it striped the surface and it now looks terrible.
Don't use these (or anything, for that matter) to 'clean' collectible coins. Attempting to clean coins devalues them if they are truly collectible.
k this product ia good but its so impossible to find any info about it i cant find out when it was invented or where it was invented or what ingedients really make it do that...
I haven't used the Magic Eraser yet, but a guy I work with said his son was feeling jealous of his future baby brother an colored all over the new baby furniture, walls even the bed spread with a dry erase marker. The Magic Eraser had removed it all!
I honestly don't think Donna has used the Eraser before because there is no comparison between it and a regular rag. The Eraser is amazing and works on everything I've used it for. It's truly one of those things that lives up to it's name. I LOVE them!!!
I work in a One hour Photo lab. It is almost imposable to get the photo chemical off the Machines once it has dried on them. One day I tried the Mr. Clean Eraser, chemicals came right off. Now the Mr. Eraser is all we use on the Machines.

I found some websites that appear to debunk the whole "Magic Eraser Formaldehyde Myth"...
1. According to Wende in San Francisco: "The NIH considers the Magic Eraser to be non-toxic. The formaldehyde rumor comes from the fact that the ingredients on the Magic Eraser include a formaldehyde-melamine-sodium bisulfate copolymer: http://tinyurl.com/bjvhe
That doesn't mean it releases formaldehyde, just that the material is one of those massive complicated chemical chains with molecules that look like (or started life as) formaldehyde. (It has sodium in the polymer, too, but that doesn't make it salt.)"
2. Snopes
3. Mr. Clean's own take on the formaldehyde myth
I came across your article on the multi uses for the magic eraser. I have used this product and found it most effective, however I have recently heard that the active ingredient that makes is so powerful is formeldehyde!! Is there some way of confirming this?
I see that people have used it to clean melted plastic off of toasters etc. Can anyone exlpain how? My kids melted a plastic bag to my fireplace and I'm desperate!!! Thanks for any info!
I moved into a house that had off white Pergo floors that had some kind of adhesive on them that dirt stuck to. The previous owner had gotten his money back from Pergo because he could not remove whatever it was either. The floors were a disaster. I got a free magic eraser in the mail and tried it on the floors. It took everything up. Before I moved into the house my sister, brother-in-law and I were on our hands and knees scrubbing with straight clorox and steel wool to get up about a fourth of the black marks. Paint thinner and goo be gone did nothing. The magic eraser is great house cleaning tool.
I love these little cleaning tools. I have a cleaning business and I use them everywhere!
Another great place to use these is on the linoleum floor. For the frequently traveled paths that get dirty and wont come up with your average mop. My clients were surprised at how clean and white their floors became after useing these. ( and needless to say, became reacurring clients afterward!)
I just wish they lasted longer! =)
Great Job Mr Clean!
I found yet another use for the Magic Eraser this past weekend...
I used it to clean out the INSIDES of my kitchen drawers and cabinets. I knew it worked well on the outsides -- especially since they're white and have that slightly rough texture to them.
But I found that even on the insides, it just took one wipe to get rid of the "gunk" that was accumulating in the bottom of the silverware drawer, and all the fingerprints & crumbs that had gathered in the corners of the cabinets.
Magic Eraser even made the "junk drawer" look good again!
TIP: I mentioned in the article above that I cut the full-size eraser into 3 or 4 smaller chunks to prolong its use. I was feeling extremely frugal this weekend, and I ended up cutting one eraser into even smaller chunks.
One full-size eraser yielded 9 mini-erasers! It worked just as well and held up just as good as the fatter chunks of eraser did. You just need it to be big enough to get a grip on while you're using it. Luckily, that doesn't take much.
I have fallen in love with the magic eraser - as a mom of three and a preK/Kindergarten teacher, it is definitely the handiest clean-up tool in the cabinet! I found this site trying to find something to remove rust from my countertop - since I keep the eraser in stock at home, I'm cleaning away as soon as school is out!
I was looking for a way to remove hairspray build-up and came across this site. I knew I had the Magic eraser in the cabinet. I left the computer and ran to get it. It worked!! After many useless attempts to remove the build-up, like acetone, alcohol and several different cleaners, The Magic Eraser did the trick!!!
Mr. Clean Erasers are definitely the most useful cleaning product out there! I cleaned plastic kid chairs with dishsoap, bleach, kaboom and ajax and they still looked grimey. One swipe of Mr. Clean Eraser and they looked brand new. I give Mr. Clean Eraser two BIG thumbs up!
I think that the Magic eraser is the most usless thing ever. You may as well use a wet rag to clean.
I never would have purchased this product only becuase the name actually includes the word "Magic". (If Mr. Clean really wants to show me some magic, teach me how to clean my house with a snap of my fingers) But becuase of your post I spend the few dollars and love it. I'm hooked. Not only because it cleans, but it actually cleans surfaces with only water, where I was using chemicals before. I have pets, so this is a big plus for me. Thanks!
Ok...so I clicked on this article because cleaning house...I no like...and I thought that this may help me to at least get through it a little quicker and get the results necessary that I'm looking for. I haven't bought one yet but I wanted to comment on the many uses for this product. I got quite a few laughs (unintended or not) from a couple of them but the topper was cleaning bird poop off of the bird bath! One has to tell oneself, "I think I'll get that birdbath free of the bird poop once and for all!" Ok...I'm done. Thanks for posting it.
